Securing Your WiFI

You are probably here because the article you read on securing your wireless network.

Here are some general instructions:

First log on to your wireless router via a hardwire connection (preferred) as you will lose your wireless connection once you start making changes to it. The default log on / password is usually admin / admin. If that didn't work, look for your router instructions and follow the steps provided for you. If you don't' have the instructions, search for it at the manufacturers website.

Once logged in, you want to look for the section that talks about wireless security. That is where you will choose the option for "WPA-personal" or something similar.

You may have the option to set the encryption level like 64 or 128 or 256. Remember that the 256 is the highest level and will require a minimum set of characters in your phrase. The 64 is the minimal and thus requires less words in your phrase.

You will be asked to enter a phrase that will be used for the encryption of the connection. Choose something that is not so easy yet you will find easy to remember.. Like "alohamangos" "crazylady" "ilovenewyork" .. You can make it as complex as you want , but just remember what it is.

Note: If you don't see a WPA as an option then you will need to make sure you have the latest firmware for your router. Check out the support section of the router's manufacturer.

Once you have setup the wireless router, It will reboot itself automatically or ask you to allow it to reboot. Once that happens you will loose your wireless connection to it.

In your laptop you'll need view the list of available wireless networks to connect to your wireless router again , and this time it will ask you for a pass phrase. Enter the same phrase here and you should be in like flint.. Whamo you have protected WiFI network..

Note: Depending on your laptop, you may need to look for that parameter in the "security" section and set it up similar to the way you had set it up in your router.
